D_RAW!
A drawing instrument.

Artists began not only finished paintings, but also
working drawings with preliminary sketches on the
support. They often used impermanent or less visible
materials, like stylus, charcoal, or black chalk, to
execute these underdrawings, because they intended to
erase them or cover them over with more permanent
media like ink, wash, or white heightening. Occasionally
slight traces of the underdrawings remain visible to the
naked eye. Even if they are completely covered over,
researchers can sometimes see the underdrawings by
means of laboratory techniques like infrared
reflectography.

Although less apparent to the viewer than chalk, ink,
and wash, the primary material of drawings is in fact the
support, the two dimensional surface on which the artist
works. The drawn image consists of the intermingling
and contrast of the support and the applied medium.
Often artists indicate light or convex surfaces with the
reserved blank paper alone. The texture and density of
the drawing is determined as much by the underlying
surface as the characteristics of the drawing medium.
Now the emergence of new working methods required an
expansion of the functions of drawing, the character of
a computerscreen as a support and D_RAW as a drawing instrument
encouraged flexibility and inventiveness
